Finding my way to modern . . .

Posted by Jeanmarie Grimsley at August 23. 2005

Hello all, I've been an avid fan of Dwell and the LiveModern boards, but was too shy to add my voice to the general din until, lo and behold, I discovered there's actually a Jacksonville contingent! If the rest of you can come out of the Faux Meditteranean closet, then so can I. My husband and I live in Avondale. At present, we're in a rental house, although we used to live in what was a 1940s precursor to the lovely track homes we all know and love (NOT) from the 50s. Then came Hurricane Jeanne, which effectively wiped (actually flooded) the house away, and now we're rebuilding from scratch. Our intention is to fit a (relatively) modernist interior within a traditional, two-story shingle-style house (RAP won't allow anything less), and through DWELL, I feel like I've found an entirely new world that looks to the future rather than obsessing about the past. Now I'm devouring all these cool new books and shoveling out some serious $$ on finds on EBay. (LOVING my Cherner armchair.) I've seen some references to a future meeting and would love to know more.

Welcome,

Hope to see you and your husband at the next meeting. We would love to see what you are going to do with your new home. My wife, daughter and I live in Murray Hill, just across 17 from you. RAP is an easy battle, what I am looking for is a fight with the Jacksonville Historic Preservation Board. We are getting ready to start on some modern designs that meet all of the historic preservation guidelines without trying to copy history. We will be designing them with Springfield in mind for construction. I also have a classic Cape Cod at the beach that will be very modern inside. No concrete floors, but very European. Looking forward to hearing more about the closet Avondale modernists.

If you would like for me to add you to our mailing list, just send me an e-mail and I will add you to the list. We have a meeting coming up September 12th with the location TBD…..Probably downtown.

Greg
