modern in Jacksonville

Hi,
My husband and I are looking to move to Jacksonville from South Florida. Any opinions on where to look for modern type houses? We'd like to be close to downtown, as hopefully, if things work out, I'll work for the new main library. I was lucky enough to work on the Eames Collection at the Library of Congress on a Fellowship, so of course I'm appreciative of that type of style.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum,

Luckily in Jacksonville, it is pretty easy to get downtown. If you work at the library you will have your own parking garage. As for the modern home, you will probably have to cross the Main Street Bridge into San Marco to start. There are a few mid-century homes in that area, but the prices are high and many have been butchered. As you move east out Atlantic Blvd. around the University area, you can still find some interesting homes. Greg Gomes, who is a member of our group, and lives in a mid-century home, is a realtor that specializes in modern homes. He is new to Jacksonville, but has become very knowledgeable, quickly. Personally, I have been looking for infill lots to build new modern homes between 1200 and 1500 sq. ft. Unfortunately it is hard to place what we call modern homes into historic districts such as Riverside/Avondale (On the West side) and in Springfield (Just North of Downtown). You can always take a traditional bungalow or ranch and remodel it with a modern twist.

I'm new to this site and looking for information about architects and contractors when I read your note. I'm in the market for a small block home to renovate and was driving around the Arlington neighborhoods of 'Floral Bluff' and 'River Forest'. There were a couple of lots for sale on Floral Bluff with a Vanguard sign. And there was a nice little modern for sale on the cornor of River Bluff Rd N and Windermere Dr. This was a week or two ago so don't know if still available.

Good luck.cheeki@mac.com
