Hi:
Besides DWR, Modernica, West Elm; can anyone tell me where else I can find affordable modern furniture? Any websites or brands i should look out for? Thanks for the help!
thanks for the links...
is there anything else? i'm looking for items that look like bb italia, zanolta but not at the price? is there something similar but a little cheaper?
try Sacndinavian Design. Based on your name being sfZOO, you might be in the bay area, and Scandinavian has stores in Berkely and San Mateo. They also have a warehouse in San Mateo that has warehouse sales once a year with great buys.

this store is in toronto but the stuff comes from Hong Kong, I imagine there is a distributor near you. See hudson sofa for example (pretty much a ripoff of the Harry).

some of this stuff is available through DWR
I have a blog about cool products for the modern home. Everything I write about also tells where to buy the design. They vary across price ranges which often correlates to how exclusive something is. There's great stuff everywhere and that's what the blog's about.
The site is called LoftLust. Email me with questions or suggestions. Hope you find what you're looking for!
adding loftlust to my list of blogs... ;o)
One way to get affordable modern is to find an interior designer/architect friend. They can order most stuff at about 40% of retail.
$550 eames chairs can be had for $350, for example.
thanks for the links!
i've been to hong kong before but never saw a shop like rshop. Does anyone know the vendor for their product? Since i have friends in Hong Kong, I would love to see their other items.
Or does anyone know vendors who produce modern furniture? I would love to open up a small furniture space...
Thanks again for all the help!
i don't know about the quality of their items, but target actually appears to have some cheap modern stuff. i liked the look of the Takeda dining table and this cool-looking desk

I second the Target recommendation. They have great bedding and glassware. Also, TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods have really nice modern finds. The only drawback is that you have to go often, and there are usually only 1 or 2 items that match - like barstools. Yesterday, I was in TJ Maxx and there was a wonderful floorlamp...visually very much like an Isamu Noguchi...for only $25. Bombo stools and the like can regularly be found at HomeGoods for around $75 to $100. But as I said, only one or two of the same color/style at a time.

I'm so pleased that contributors to this forum are open to inexpensive, unpretentious modern styles. I have the full gamut from expensive Eames originals to flea-market junkers in my house and it's usually more fun to discover a hidden treasure than buy something expensive and new (well, sometimes ha ha!). Anyway, another way to find affordable modern pieces is to hunt through estate sales, flea markets and antique stores. Many times, the seller doesn't know much about the piece and you can find some cool stuff. I just picked up a pair of Saarinen Tulip (not original Knoll, but Burke) chairs for almost nothing at a country crafters mall of all places! Good luck!
Shelving is a really hard thing to find. New good-quality shelving costs a ton.
I found a danish looking wall unit at a junky flea market for 60 bucks. It is in walnut and is modular. It includes four shelves, a desk box, a storage box with sliding door, a magazine rack, mounting brackets and two chromed cylindrical sconces.
Our firm (www.bcj.com) is entering the market with a line of maple furniture that is based on designs prototyped for the Ballard Library in Seattle. The line includes Tables, Lounge Chair, Sofa, End Tables, Childrens Table, Childrens Chairs, Desks, Etc.
The site should be updated with the new line in a couple of weeks. The vocabulary is simple planes of solid maple plywood. It is very ecologically friendly and has a clean aesthetic. It also is economical to purchase and ship.
Any news on the update of the website? I was there and didn't see anything about furniture. Gorgeous work, btw.
