Have you ever ridden a New Orleans Street Car?

Posted by darrel at September 07. 2005

This isn't necessarily a modern question, but you are smart furniture folks. Have you ever ridden a streetcar in New Orleans? If so, do you remember the wood bench seets and how you could move the back of the seat to the front to 'flip' the orientation of the bench?

In otherwords, the back of the bench was on a large hinge and you could slide it forward, which in turn slid the seat in the reverse direction and then allowed you to then sit the opposite way.

Any idea if those seats are unique only to those street cars or if they're maybe available some where or know of a similiar product?

The basic idea of a reversible seat is fairly common in subway cars, light rail, etc. I doubt that anyone makes wooden ones any more, though.
