Indirect Lighting?

Our living room has a soffit (I think that's what it's called) along one wall at 8'. It is about 15 wide and the ceiling is 10'. There is a switched outlet above the soffit with a dimmer, so it's clear that this was intended for some sort of indirect lighting. The ceiling is stained TG redwood. Right now it sports a clamp-on work light, but what would be a more attractive choice?
ummm, I'd see if it was possible to hide some single tube flourescents up there and hardwire them into the switched outlet, or you could try some off-the-shelf rope-lights as well. Anything that you can completely hide the source of the light would be appropriate.

There is a 3 lip behind which I can hide lighting, wiring, and some truly incredible dust bunnies -- more like dust Godzillas. My dad suggested rope lighting too, but I'm not sure if the light should be diffuse like the fluorescents or ropes would provide or more focused like 3-4 spots would provide. It's about a 15' length to light. I guess that I just have to haul out the ladder and experiment. I've got some undercabinet fluorescents that could be plugged in for a while before I get around to installing them in the kitchen.
If you want to go high tech, check out the Color Kinetics LED cove lighting for soffits. It's low voltage and you can dial in any color you like. Only downside is the price.
www.wiedamark.com has a good selection of both CK and other LED brands. They have a iColor 7 inch color LED cove light for $24 in the clearance section right now. They also have a 12 inch iColor with power supply and controller for $189 and you can add additional 12 inch strips to it for $49 each.
Something like this is definitely going in my next house!
