Hello -
any recommendations for modern freestanding wood stoves? Everything I've seen is very cabin/cottage type style. Just won't do. Any ideas?
thanks

I happen to know the Morsoe 4600 is about $3000 installed.

I agree, Rais @ www.raiswittus.com
I've been in love with their clean lines for years and finally got to spec the 106 model this month on a modern home in Idaho, yes I said modern in Idaho.
I'm partial to the Topolino, nice looking and even more efficient than Rais .Topolino Stove
But we are also thinking of going the masonry heater route which is much more costly but can heat more space.
We have a SCAN 47 with stainless steel sides and we love it. It is so efficient and produces so much heat that we can warm our entire 2500 sq. ft. house with only 3 small pieces of wood. It looks really beautiful, too.

Greg,
I saw that this was a eurozone product and its not cheap according to the link below. Look in the comments section, 6970 swiss francs = $5,500 or so.

This is one of the links mentioned in the comments which goes to the home company I believe.

what about the Fire Orb...
www.fireorb.net
They just qouted me at $5800 for a black powder coat finish and $6900 for stainless steel. includes chimney system
Any comments on costs of the topolino? Anyone with experiences on the radiant heat from the FireOrb? Are installation costs similar or does the fireorb costs more to install?
I got in touch with the UK distributor for Topolino. Unfortunately there are no North American distributors and she said that I could buy one from her but that it would be almost as expensive to ship as it is to purchase. And the stoves start at $5,000+. While we're at it here is another line of European stoves with no distributors in the US, Rika from Austria.

One other option that we had looked at previously but didn't pursue due to cost and size of installation was a masonry heater but given the precarious nature of oil markets and the bounty of wood in my backyard we are now giving this more thought.
Here is one that we like. The type A from Biofire. We haven't contacted them yet but my wife thinks that the look is very 2001, a Space Odyssey.

We went with the Scan 5-2. It is set in place but not connected yet. I am generally happy with it, but the firebox seems a little on the small size. Looks like I will have to cut my firewood to 14 inch lengths. The cooking compartment and soapstone are great. Ended up costing $4,100. Ordered it from a distributor in Knoxville. Plus another couple of hundred to install.
