A fabulous modern accent

Posted by Meris Ingram at November 06. 2005

I just discovered the coolest throw pillows. My designer told me about this site that showcases satin throw pillows with art right on them. I bought them off the website where there are six different series of designs - www.abodeliveableart.com. Have never seen anything like this – definitely worth checking out! Anyway thought I would share this great find with my modernist friends.

Cheers,
Meris

Hmmmm, another 'testimonial'?

Re: A fabulous modern accent

Posted by darrel at November 07. 2005

these boards aren't too busy these days and the onslaught of spam isn't helping. :(

What- people can't pass on cool products in a forum of modernists without suspect? What has the world come to?

Re: A fabulous modern accent

It's not the promotion of your product that is annoying, it's your fake testimonial that makes it sound like you're innocently talking up a product you found. It's pretty close to lying. The fact that you don't participate in the forums in any other way also points to this. It's just like the spam that shows up in your email.

realpill and incubus,
so let me get this straight if you are some one who just joined the forum and your first or second post is a cool modern website, you are obviously a spammer? I don't want to get a war started but Meris felt that that site might be worth while to take a look at, and instantly it is spam because they only have one or two post on the forums. Also to how busy these are do you think that maybe more people would post things if they knew that the first time the post a link to something they get accused of being a spammer and annoy, and as realpill stated above it's your fake testimonial that makes it sound like you're innocently talking up a product you found. It's pretty close to lying. so in all this i think it is members like realpill that jump on someone for posting a link that is thought to be spam is detremental to this site. I have not posted a lot either and a good thing i haven't posted a link because i might be considered a spammer also.
and to meris i am sorry for the way these two have jumped down your throat for posting a link you thought was helpful and cool to other modernist here.

Anyone ever buy any products from eurway? They have very cool modern furniture, and it is cheap. Did I mention they have retro modern pillows also? No, I am not a spammer.

OK, to original poster of this thread: If you are not connected to this company in anyway, you have my humble apology. I certainly don't want to make the forum unwelcoming.

What has the world come to?

A world full of SPAM.

and instantly it is spam because they only have one or two post on the forums.

If it looks like SPAM and smells like SPAM, well...

It just has all of the tell-tale signs of one...cheesy overhyped testimonial. Useless exclamation points. First post to the forum. Etc.

If it's not, no biggie. Apologies all around.

Thanks jkalm. And incubus_of_habit, I LIVE in Toronto so thought I would post on that forum as well for my first post since I JUST signed up last week. I am new to this type of forum and thought I would contribute somehow but you know, I am never going to log in again with these insults flying around. So, anyone else wanting to recommend a site or product - beware. Way to kill free speach guys.

Re: A fabulous modern accent

Posted by Adam Burke at November 13. 2005

Sigh, look, this was not meant to 'kill free speach'. We get a fair amount of fake testimonials on this site and it's really annoying because these posters don't contribute anything to the community. They are just looking for free advertising. Your post sounded very similar to the way some of these are phrased. I am sincerely sorry about jumping on your post by mistake. It was an honest mistake with no ill intention toward a new member. I hope you understand this and will continue to use the site.

Re: A fabulous modern accent

No one is insulting you ingram. Your post sounded exactly like SPAM. People don't like SPAM. Now you know. No biggie.

(Consider yourself warned, my chin-scratching blather follows): The post set of my BS-detector, as well. One of the really bad things about SPAM/viral marketing is the corrosive effect it has on communities like this one that rely on trusting relatively anonymous strangers. So, when Meris tries to offer a legit testimonial we all discount it, and treat it like an ad. And just to reiterate the point: even after all the back and forth I still don't know if the post was legit, and there's no way to check! People can build up cred through lots of thoughtful posts, but new members might have useful things to share, too.

Whoa, let's turn the sensitivity dial back a bit. I personally come to the Furniture, Fixtures and Furnishings forum partly to find out information and links to, guess what? Furniture, Fixtures and Furnishings. And that's just what this original post was about. It doesn't really matter to me if it IS spam if it has some neat stuff I might want to look at (that's just me personally, I know there are probably rules about these things). Let's keep in mind this poster did NOT invade an existing thread but started their own. As far as incubus' comments, let's see...

cheesy overhyped testimonial
I've seen worse...much worse. But if you are real and you really like something, how else are you going to express it?

Useless exclamation points
Gee, I counted just one.

First post
Should we treat everyone's first post with such skepticism?

Let's give meris the benefit of a doubt before we jump down their throats and then end up apologizing for it later. SPAM or not, someone might really want to know about those pillows...why not here? And if it turns out to indeed be SPAM, well I promise to be first in line with the torch and pitchfork. ;)

So what's your point? That someone posted some 'spam' on the Materials and Methods forum that talked about (gasp) Materials and Methods? Correct me if I'm wrong, here, but isn't that what these forums a *supposed* to be about?? That's why I come to these forums...to learn about new Materials and Methods and/or Furniture, Fixtures and Furnishings. Some posts may be from people who use these products, some may be from people who are trying to make a living selling these products and need to get awareness out. And that's fine with me, because that is why I look at these forums in the first place.

Here is what they did NOT do:

They did NOT invade another thread with a completely inappropriate subject.

They did NOT try to sell me something that made my penis bigger.

They did NOT post in the geographical forums or other forums/blogs in which product announcements are completely inappropriate.

In both of these circumstances they posted a NEW thread in a forum that was appropriate to the product in question. Now if any of us have used their products and found it particularly useful or particularly shoddy, then we are free to respond to their post in the appropriate manner. Spam or not, these posts are what I come to the MM and FFF to find out about. Hopefully some people that are not involved in the product will have some feedback that I feel is helpful to my choice as to whether or not to purchase it. But these rants against 'spam' are not helpful to anyone in this forum.

We need to realize that if people can't make a living (i.e. sell products) in the modernist manner, then the movement is doomed to failure. The MM and FFF forums are, in my opinion, a unique place where community and commerce can mingle.

good points though diversen.

Alright, spam-lover ;) I guess we'll just agree to disagree. jparnell is right, this has gone on long enough. Sorry to kick a dead horse.

most people who have designers, probably don't have time to be on this board. If it looks like SPAM, smells like SPAM, well...

Personally, I think the pillows look like crap.;)

Re: A fabulous modern accent

Posted by Joe Barthlow at November 15. 2005

just kidding. But they do smell like SPAM.

If my designer wasted my time with those pillows, s/he'd be fired.

I guess the forum moderator is not checking in on this thread. So I'll make a comment.

If you think this person (Meris) is spamming this site, I suggest you vote with your feet and take your eyeballs to another thread. I see nothing wrong with what s/he posted. If you don't like the design, that's one thing. Comment on that.

But to claim it's spam is out of bounds, IMHO. Those of you that have claimed or intimated this as spam have added nothing to the conversation.

Spammers are going to love this place with all the attention they get. ;o)

Re: A fabulous modern accent

Well, there were a lot of folks that commented before I did. I assume they had a problem with the post only because they make pillows, so their attention to this post was really self defeating.
