Intercom system conversion ideas

Posted by LiveModern Webmaster at October 03. 2005

The 1974 home we bought comes with a functioning intercom system. We thought about just removing the boxes in each room since we doubt we would utilize it but wanted to know if anyone had any ideas of converting to a more updated system that might encompass more features or better sound/reception. Since the wires are already run throughout house maybe there is another use that I am not considering. Thanks.

It's most likely a NuTone, right?
In my opinion, some of the problems with the nutone system is the wires themselves. They werent always very good about staying away from electrical wires, outlets, fixtures, etc. Those devices can introduce noise into the system.
The nutone system itself, while not exactly modern, can work well enough. Heh, even the new stuff has the same look as the devices they sold in the seventies. They did at least add white as a color you can get the intercom parts in. I would like to see some black, possibly some new designs myself. I see it specified now and again in some installations I have worked in. It is low cost, and can be effective, but like I said, the wiring is something you want to do right.
What is probably behind your units is just a couple of wires twisted, and wire nutted or taped, or maybe even crimped.

Another use for the existing wires is a doorbell in each room.
okay, maybe not.
