Inexpensive area rug options?

Posted by Jeremy Kenik at July 13. 2005

The last piece of my design puzzle is a neutral area rug, with a maxiumum dimension of 10' or so. I've managed to find great deals on everything else in my place, but can't seem to find a good deal (under $500) on a rug. Any suggestions? I'm looking for a solid color (cream or light sand) and, preferably, in wool.
Thanks!

IKEA. They have some some really nice rugs well under $500. Good luck!

You could look for a wool remnant and have the edges bound since you want a solid color.

Carpet remnants are a great idea - that material is usually quite expensive when buying off a roll, but cheap in a remnant. It took my wife and I about 5 carpet outlets to find a color texture we liked, but we ended up with what we wanted in a 10'x11' for under 300.00 after binding.

check out Flor carpet squares. I think it would make a great area rug.

I just did our family foom with these. They are pretty cool. I had enough left over to do an area rug in the living room. It turned out nice.

I gotta caution you to be careful of some of the cheaper Ikea rugs... We have a nylon one that has been bomb proof, but we bought a thick fiber (wool?) rug last year for our baby daughter's room and it has been the bane of my existence! It sheds red lint at such an alarming rate that vacuuming it 3 times a day could hardly keep up. My daughter, with her permanently sticky mouth and hands, and damp diaper area, is constantly covered in red link. I hate the thing. I finally decommissioned it last week.

We likewise had an Ikea rug that we had to decomission--it was less than $100, so maybe the pricier ones hold up better.

We replaced it with a rug from target. Unfortunately, I can't seem to locate it on their web site, but it was brown, geometric, modern, and $89.

We think of it as our wannabe Angela Adams rug and has been fine for us so far.

I had carpet from home depot bound for about $300-$350. More than an Ikea but it's so much nicer on the feet. We have concrete floors and I wanted something really comfy on the toes. Besides, the carpet there had a warranty and claimed to be industrial strength and stain resistant. With a dog and cat and at a reasonable price it was the way to go.

We ended up getting a medium pile deep olive green shag. We couldn't find any shag we liked better. The version they have has the thick yarn type threads in a lighter green and really skinny darker green strands with a sheen to it. It gives off a nice texture visually with having thickness and color variance.

How much do the interfaceflor rugs run per sq. ft??

Re: Inexpensive area rug options?

Posted by mjfree at July 19. 2005

At least one variety of FLOR seemed to run 3.77/sqft. I think I saw some commercial stuff that was a dollar more.

I am also looking for an area rug. This seems like an exciting option, but the assembly looks dicey. Does anybody have feedback as to how well the assembly holds up under a kitchen table, with chairs sliding in and out. My concern is the edges, away from the sticky dots in the corners, curling up and getting caught on chair legs and toes.

if you visit Flor's site you can request a free catalog. it's very nice.

the prices on the panels vary greatly. i can't recall the prices, but some of them were expensive while some were not.

I have the Flor installed in my kitchen. In my old place, the install worked great, and it stayed flat, in my new place the floor has trap door to the cellar, and the tiles don't lie well at all. Ours was one of the more expensive ones, and it worked out to be about $5 a square foot. I think my only real regret is that we should have gotten a darker color, the brown we have is nice, but the orange shows dirt really bad.
As far as cheap, I always love a nice sisal rug, if you don't want anything too foot friendly. They are usually very reasonable priced.
If you need something really foot friendly (and its not in the kithcen) you can usually find a nice flokati rug for a pretty reasonable price, especially if you hunt around a little. I have always loved the look of a good flokati, plus, I think that they age very well.
Good luck, and let us know what you choose.

I am/was considering a FLOR rug too, but I find their prices very high (not so much in context of other rugs, mind you, but in the this is a rental for god's sake, I don't want to spend the money). Is there anything else out there like FLOR, but not as high? I have a 7 X 11 space to cover and FLOR will cost $287.68 plus tax on the cheaper end and $383.68 on the higher end. Mostly I am using the rug to create an anchor in a bizarre, unfortunate space that should be a living room, but must be a dining room and ambient space as there is no eating area in the house we are renting and we spend a remarkable amount of time at the table. Thanks!

Modular carpet tiles are extremely popular for commercial interiors. Interface/FLOR has done a great job of marketing this idea to the public but at (what I feel) is a premium price. Before you buy, you may want to google modular carpet tiles or carpet tiles- you may find another manufacturer/ liquidator that can give you a similar product for about $2 sqft. icarpettiles.com even lets you buy left overs. It may take longer for you to find the neat graphic patterns similar to FLOR's, but the money you'll save using commercial stuff will probably make it worth while. You'd be amazed how well the thick puffy double sided tape works for holding tiles down, provided it's not too puffy, and you can get that stuff at a hardware store.

cb2.com has a nice 8x10 wool rug for $499. it's the light color you're looking for and has a subtle circle pattern for added design and texture. also available in smaller sizes.

it's the eclipse rug

Depending on the season, you can usually find a decent rug at West Elm for under $500. They seem to change their syles/products about 3 times a year and have a nice selection of affordable pieces.
