Anyone got any resources for modern entry doors? I keep finding more styles suited to commercial outlets but I want something more inviting and different. And what about screen doors too? Any ideas?
So far I've seen doors that are too heavy on the glass (want more privacy) or look like they could be hiding a vault. Anyone seen anything wooden around?
We are using the #486 door by BC DOOR out of british coulumbia. It's a fir door, with horizontal slats separated by glass slivers. Their website is www.bcdoor.com
Thier site is a little hard to navigate, click on more doors and look uder Prairie 1.
Try looking at http://www.lenfex.com . I have checked out their showroom in Brooklyn, and they had some of their doors on display. Very solid, very substantial stuff. But from what I can recall, they weren't exactly cheap- I believe the prehung wooden entry doors started around $2,000. But they seemed somewhat negotiable.
On the other hand, their bathroom fixtures were a bargain. Really neat, modern stuff. I am probably going to buy some of my toilets there, none of which were more than $350.
Another resource could be Jaroff (beware of bad web site!)
What I am doing since we are in a market for a new door is going to a big box home improvement store (I went to Mendards but I am sure most other ones would do it) and got a custom door from their stock options speced out. I wanted a basic door with all glass so I can frost it later for privacy and it was actually cheaper than some of the doors in the store since I didn't want the pane framing, molding, etc. I think the total was around $250.

Oh and there's these at Pincecrest doors (check the one on the left - the sort of shoji screen looking one) that look nice, but I don't trust any place that makes you buy their catalog.

Looks great can you give me an idea on pricing??
Thats the one!
We are ordering it without machining so we can install it on pivots instead of hinges. It should compliment the horizontal exterior siding and allow for light without compromising privacy.
If you have plenty of money and like the industrial look....

We are remodeling our 1956 home and found great suggestions in a previous Dwell article and also photos of old homes. We went with wood and privacy glass for a simple look. It's just a Simpson door that we ordered for under $1500. We love the end result.
yeah when will these manufacturers get it. This is a tough thing to find. Lots of manufacturers will quote you custom orders, but the price is high and the finished examples are few, it's hard for me to buy on faith.:hm:
I just ran across some really nice doors. Here's a link, with pricing:
http://www.stegbar.com.au/products/windows_and_doors/timber/mc_entry_doors/pricing.php
Fyi about that from BC pictured above. I priced it out and it was like $950 in cedar, and i'm sure cheaper in stain grade pine or paint grade pine
I'm on a very tight budget for my remodeling project, and so far in my research, these folks seem to have the best selection and prices. Some very stunning designs, too...I'm buying the interior doors with embossed glass for sure.

We found this one, and it is actually built here in our state. I even discovered I know someone who works there. I dont think he can get me any discounts on one, but we are considering ordering just the glass door lite with frame this week or next. Just that part was about 650 dollars. Not too shabby. Our entry door is in pretty good shape, even though it is hollow core luan it worked fairly well this previous winter. We are going to modify the sill a bit to provide a better seal, and then put a full glass storm on the outside. Our city codes require one. Ugh.
What do you think of this door?
The website is ODL.com. They have some other modern designs, but not many.

The door looks fine. The glass is.. well, interesting.
These fancy glass options are common from door manufacturers - as if they did not have them they would not sell any doors. I think the custom glass most often look goofy in the catalogs, and they seem to be used by developers to impress. They can look good in the right situation but you have decide that for yourself.
Those architectural steel doors from Forms and Surfaces are beautiful.
Anyone know how their pricing compares to Neoporte? Are they similarly priced?
I figure Neoporte pricing has to cover their extensive ad campaign!
Does anyone know how much those commercial storefront doors go for? I assume they're in the thousands, too???

That BC Door is very cool. I called them for a quote, and they told me ~$3400 for a 3'6 x 8' pre-hung door in knotty alder. Plus $350 shipping to northern California. Kind of pricy. They also told me that the wood species doesn't affect the price that much.
I also love those Stegbar doors in the link posted earlier in the thread. Looks like that's an Australian company though, so I'm not sure how I'd get one here.
We may end up going with a Simpson door. They're pretty reasonable price-wise. I like their 2055 model:
They say they can do it with frosted glass inserts instead of the wood panels. Still waiting on a price.

I went with the Neoporte and rejoice in it every day! It's a piece of functional art and worth every cent.
