Shower head questions

Posted by Jonathan Mathews at November 13. 2005

For those of you that have gone for a rain shower type head (i.e. mounted on the ceiling), how would you characterize your experience? Can you get clean with just one overhead fixture, or do you need a handheld system in the shower as well? Any other comments regarding installation, maintenance and water usage would be appreciated as well!

Thanks

I don't have a rain-type shower head, but I do have one of the hand-helds by Moen. And though it isn't one of the best on the market, I am completely sold on hand-held showers. They work just as well as a fixed head, but have the added convenience of cleaning hard to reach areas, not to mention they are perfect for when cleaning the shower.

the rain shower is very relaxing and enjoyable, coming from directly overhead. But they are hardly low-flow, and I would get a handshower nozzle as well if I were doing it.

Thanks for the replies; I figured this thread was dead. I did decide to do both. What I didn't realize was how ridiculous the pricing is for the diverter valve necessary to run a second output! I'm set on Kohler's Purist line for valves, Hansgrohe for the handshower, but could use some suggestions for the rain shower head. I'm loath to put something too pricey above eye level...

Expo and thus probably Home depot carry Pegasus rain heads which look pretty good and are reasonably priced.

Just a thought about rain-type heads: the higher you can mount it, the more satisfying the flow will be at lower flow rates. Gravity is accelerating the drops, so the farther they fall, the faster they're going.
