Ideas for Designing an Office Desk

Purchase an antique piece. If you love antiques, visit a resale shop or flea market. Look for a piece that is sturdy, even if it may need a little work. Styles include roll top, banker's and secretary desks. Revive old wood with mineral oil, or think of refinishing if it is beyond repair. Sand down the old finish, and clean and re-stain the wood. After a few coats of stain, apply a protective coating to safeguard the results of all your elbow grease.

Tables Are for More Than Eating Meals
If you want a large desk that doesn't look like a desk, opt for a dining room table. For an open feeling, use a glass top table. Using a dining table provides ample surface space.

Knock the Door Down
Doors make novel desks. If you have a small desk, place a door on top to increase the top surface area. Leg or support choices are file cabinets and even saw horses. Saw horses are tripod-like legs that carpenters or builders use for tabletop saws. The look is like that of an architectural drafting table. If you use a paneled door, go to a local glass cutter and have a piece of glass, at least 1/4 inch thick, made to create an even surface.
