Dealing/Haggling with High-end Furniture Dealers (e.g. B&B Italia)

Posted by Jim Hong at January 13. 2008

Hi all,

We're in the market for a sofa (Andy) from a dealer that sells B&B Italia.  We're well-aware of the kind of markup on these high-end pieces, but this is our first foray into the boutique dealer market.

It is possible to bargain on price with boutique dealers?  What is 'customary' in terms of haggled discount?  Is it possible to get as much as 10% (or more) off full retail?

Thanks,

Jim

I am curious too - we are in the hunt for a Minotti couch

I've had success bargaining with Poliform and saved about 20% on the cost of a Zoe bed (after first being dragged across the coals by Europe by Net).  The first thing I'd do is call anonymously and ask if they discount to the trade.  If so and they're willing to tell you what percentage, you have your starting point.  Poliform typically only offers a 10% trade discount but I was able to purchase the bed for a much steeper discount.

Hope this helps.

You might get a discount if you order more items at once. Since the furniture store is marking up all of the prices, there will be more room to discount your final price if you order more items at once. Try to bargain for a cheaper price during a sale or even wait until the end of the year when the store is trying to clear its remaining inventory.

Some furniture manufactures get their furniture from the same factory as other manufacturers. They usually add something different to the product and give it a different name. When you are searching for furniture, try to have a look at other brands since you might find the same style at a lower price.

I had good luck in my home town of Thomaston, GA -- near Atlanta.  there is a furniture manufacturer there that does high end and luxury, formal dining tables and chairs called Thomaston Furniture Designs.

I got a great deal without paying the fancy catalog prices.
