Picture ledge for displaying photography

Posted by GMAndrews at January 02. 2008

Hi, can anyone point me to where I could find a nice picture ledge that I can use to display photography?

I was surprised that I could find relatively few styles on the Internet.

Below are a few I've found.  The aluminum ledge isn't bad, but I don't like the curve and would prefer it a little thicker.  The M1 ledge is interesting, but is only available in a single color.

Crate and Barrel has one that we may go with if we can't find anything better.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks everyone!

I have always made my own using finish grade 1x and slat or moulding, painted the same color as the wall so it disappears...here is one example:

In this case I think I used 1 x 2, 2" being the depth of the ledge.  Cut to length, orient on the wall and mark location of studs.  Drill holes through the 2" dimension at marks, and another larger countersink approx. halfway through.  Use 3" deck screws or similar to screw into studs and finish by brad nailing/gluing slat or the dimensional moulding of your choice, mitering the corners.  Fill and paint.  Fast, easy custom ledge for  like $5 in the color and length of your choosing.

I've done similar DIY projects but faced the front of the ledge with a strip of aluminum from the home center that is about 1/4 taller than the wood, so about a true 1 inch.  Simple and slick.
