Flooring recommendations : Cost is a factor

Posted by Marjorie at August 01. 2005

I want to replace some carpet.

I need flooring recommendations and cost is a major factor.

What exists under the carpet:
Old concrete, cracked in some places.
Bits of old linoleum on this concrete, seriously stuck to the concrete.

I LOVE to NOT have to prep this old floor very much. The carpet was laid right over the bad old floor.

I need a simple, inexpensive solution to modernize this appx. 650 sq. ft. of floor.

Though I love stained concrete, the cost and labor scares me.

At this moment, thinking carpet tiles. FLOR-esque, but a less expensive version.

This floor is very heavily used and the ability to replace dirty tiles is attractive.

Thanks for any advice.

You could float a wood-like laminate floor over the concrete. If you installed it yourself, you could do it for around $1.20/sqft. If you prefer real engineered wood laminate, this can be had for around $2.5/sqft. This is much cheaper than having carpet installed, and those carpet squares are not as cheap as you might think. BTW, I found those prices on www.ifloors.com Good Luck!
