Horizontal Slat Fences - Type of Wood?

Posted by Brent Barkley at July 04. 2007

Hey Denverites,

So I'm about to replace an ugly privacy fence that separates our driveway from our courtyard on our Cliff May in Harvey Park, and I've been doing my homework by driving around and looking at other fences in the area. I like the horizontal slat fence that I'm seeing in a lot of new fences.

Does anyone have any idea what type of wood these people are using? It almost looks like teak, but maybe it's some kind of smoothed cedar. Definitely not rough cedar. It has a very glossy/slick appearance. Typically you see it done with 2x4" slats or even really small 2x2" slats, horiztonally. Has an almost Japanese kind of feel to it, but works really well with modern houses, and the color (anywhere from a reddish to a darker walnut looking stain) adds some pop if you use it for a small courtyard type fence.

Help?

-Brent
