Seeking Modernist Living Quarters in Irving area

Posted by David Nuss at November 12. 2005

Greetings!

My wife is interviewing for a job in the Irving area this week and they have already lined up a visit with a real estate agent for her. I don't think he is a modern specialist, as she spent some time explaining our tastes.

Anyway, is there any such thing as modern housing, more urban than single family detached type, in the Irving area? Like, say, a new energy efficient condo complex or something that she should ask to visit while there?

Any other leads are appreciated.

Thanks very much!

Dave.

I am so sorry for you. Irving is about as far from urban/modern as you can get. I have an interior designer friend from Vancouver who literally gets an upset stomach from just driving through Irving.

The good news is that you won't be THAT far from Dallas where you will be able to find something you like, especially if public school quality is not a priority.

Actually, I was out there exploring the neighborhoods around the University of Dallas a few months back and noticed some new modern-ish (not wholly modern) condo construction. I think they were near the Las Colinas Country Club (just south of 114). They looked like walk-ups in kind of a modern-ish, warehouse meets stucco apartment building style - not spectacular, but a little different than your average stucco apartment.

You know, it wouldn't be unheard of to live in Dallas and commute to Irving. You'd likely be going against traffic, and depending on where you are in Dallas and where you're going in Irving, it could be a fairly short commute.

There is an older neighborhood near the Univ of Dallas called University Hills. Many of the homes were built in the 60's and I'm pretty sure there are some examples of modern(ish) design in that neighborhood. Find a real estate agent that specializes in that neighborhood.

All good tips, thanks very much. I sent her off on the plane today and she is meeting with a realtor this afternoon.

School is not an issue but rather convenience.

She is a hard worker, so is looking for something close, and small so there is minimal maintenance time and is an easy late night commute and in a secure area.

I'll pass on your comments to her and see if there are any additional tips.

It looks like the office is on the northern side of Irving, close to the airport and highway interchange. Where else in Dallas would y'all suggest?

She hasn't been offered a job yet, is just starting a 3-day interview process after a phone interview and a couple of hours with HR here on the east coast...

I cannot think of anything that meets all your criteria. That part of town is McMansions and large Mediteranian styled garden apartment complexes.

Addison Circle is probably 25 minutes from the airport. Not terribly modern but better than nothing.

The University of Dallas area someone mentioned above is probably 20 minutes from the airport as well.

There are some small modern houses sprinked through Farmers Branch and North Dallas (about 15-20 minutes from the airport). Anyone know of anything in Grapevine?
