Landscape gravel

Posted by Daniel Day at September 08. 2008

I need some help from the Modern community out there.  My wife and I have been looking (and looking) for a green colored crushed basalt stone for use in a modern landscape.  I have seen greenish stone gravel used in landscapes all over the place, such as at Urban Reserve, but haven't been able to find a source locally.  I've been to several stone yards around town and had no luck.  Does anyone have any ideas of where I might be able to look?  Any help is appreciated.

Wish I could help, I looked all over for the same thing and had no luck. I ended up gping with a grey/white crushed granite. It looks pretty good but would have prefered a darker color. Good luck!

Try Banks Stone on E. Greenbriar in Oakcliff. They have a nice basalt black landscape rock and also sell decomposed granite. The basalt black is 2.5x the cost of decomposed granite so consider that for your budget. I don't know if Banks has the green gravel you are talking about but if you take them a sample, I am sure they can find it.

Word to the wise - never put down rock without covering it in weed fabric first. In the past I have tried to cut corners by not using weed fabric. It is not worth it - put down the weed fabric otherwise you will spend your weekends pulling weeds out of the rock garden!!

Good advise, make sure to overlap the weed fabric no less than a foot, trust me the weeds will find a way. I have weeds trying to grow in the dust of the crushed granite, luckily thye are easy to pull up.

Thanks for the responses.  I ended up going with 1/2" limestone from Whiz-Q stone in Ft. Worth (http://www.whiz-q.com/).  Silly name, but pretty decent selection of stone and friendly people.  The limestone is lighter than I'd like, but overall I'm happy with the results, and the price point is not too bad (a little less than half the cost of black basalt).

I also did put down weed mat prior to putting down the stone, and so far it is working great.

I'll post some photos soon, I'd like to see what everyone thinks.
