Counter/Shelving material?

Posted by Matthew Kruse at December 29. 2005

We have a 4.5'w x 3'd nook in our condo that I want to use as a work area. My plan is to install a single shelf, something clean and simple, preferably white (same as wall color) where we can put our laptop, a task light, etc.

Any suggestions for shelving/desk material that isn't prefab kitchen countertop from Home Depot? The material has to be at least 58 wide and about 2' deep and preferably 1-2 thick. It also has to be cut-able so I can drill a hole in it for cords. Other than the prefab counters and some sheets of Melamine from HD, I've been stumped. Creative ideas are welcome~~

Thanks...Matt

How about a piece of birch-veneered plywood? If you need extra strength, glue the plywood onto of a piece of mdf and nail a nice piece of birch trim to the front. Won't cost much and would look pretty nice.

My $.02
