The exterior is still a problem, however, I am slowly introducing elements into the mainstream.. here is one of my latest spec houses..

I must agree Architectural Control Committees are a strange beast to in
which to deal. Their mission is to assure uniformity of exterior style
and design throughout a sub-division thus, in their mind, thus insuring
the value of the neighborhood is not altered by homes that do not blend
in. The rules for the sub-division are written, rather narrowly, to
limit the style of homes built and almost make the neighborhood appear
as if it were built by a single building company. While this might be a
reasonable concept in theme driven neighborhoods in custom home
neighborhoods it gets rather boring. I have argued, unsuccessfully,
that diversity of style adds to the value of an area. Furthermore, I
believe, that modern style homes can look somewhat inexpensive when
book cased by McMansions. That said, I believe the answer lies in a
moderate approach to the exterior design. perhaps an adaptation of the
Hill Country Contemporary style, simple forms, shed roofs, stone,
stucco, cedar, one light windows. The combination of shed roof on
simple forms allow you to build interiors without all the applied
cheese cake.
Having said that, I will be the first to admit that what I am speaking
is design based on a mid-century/California style as opposed to the
"modernist" design. I believe that the market for modern style homes in
conservative areas of the south is a rather small (but growing) group
of buyers that are under served. I also believe that the more drastic
the design the fewer the potential buyers. Thus as a home builder I
must, if I want to survive, appeal to the larger portion of the market.
The portion who are looking for clean and functional design that flow
seamlessly from area to area and access the outdoor spaces.
In all likelihood you may be able to adapt plans you presently build to
the style I am speaking above at or around the cost. If this sounds
