Modern Materials for less?

Posted by seekastar at November 17. 2008

We are embarking on building a modern (and green as possible ) house.   We would appreciate any input on any resources that will save us money so that we can build green and incorporate finishes that we like for things like:

8-9 ft wood doors

Pocket doors

Windows (custom and standard)

Modern Front Door resources

Bathroom fixtures/hardware

Thanks!

Feel free to search around my site Grassrootsmodern.com

It's dedicated to "affordable modern" design. We remodeled a bathroom with subwaytiles, custom stainless steel ofuro, concrete countertops, wall hung dual flush toilet, etc. Turned out pretty nice, and didn't cost a ton.

If you want to build green, the best thing you can do is build small. Thankfully, this will help with costs as well. Second, make sure your design fits your climate. Third, spend money on a pretty efficient HVAC unit.

As for saving money, once I realized that Corbusier, Gropius, the Eameses, and other early modernists used the most basic and cheap materials to amazing effect, it freed me from the idea that to get a great modern house required expensive finishes and details.

That being said, irawoods.com has a nce selection, ebay is great for things like sinks, home depot can probably get you slab doors as cheap as anyone, fastfloors.com has great prices on tile (I love the daltile fabrique) although we used the home depot white 8"x8" in the bathrooms. Finally, I am a big fanof Ikea kitchens, but I know some disagree. The real cost savings comes from using your own labor.

Marvin Integrity windows are hard to beat for price and quality. Consider where you can use sliding door hardware and old salvaged doors instead of pocket doors. www.growerssupply.com is a great source for things like stainless steel cable. Bob Swinburne www.swinburnearchitect.com
