Old vs Mod: Austin modernism makes the Sunday paper...

Posted by tom mot at April 25. 2005

There was a big front and back page spread in the Lifestyle section Sunday's paper discussing modern home development in Central/South Austin. I've started scanning the article and will put it up online for anyone interested. It might also be available online from the Statesman website, but you might have to register.

I'll try to post a link in the next day or so.

Interesting article! Thanks, folks, for pointing it out and posting the link.

I followed the Mueller Design Guidelines link, and I am sort of surprised at the narrowness of the specifications for residential structures. They pay lip service to promoting diversity and interest in the neighborhood and then go on to require ground level front or corner porches of a particular size, mandated roof slope of not less than 6:12, gables or hips, recommended columns, decorative eaves, yada yada. I'm in no way a porch-hater, but the guidelines seem restrictive in terms of siting and orientation as well as shape and ornamentation.

I'm also on the mueller redevelopment list-serv (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mueller_redevelopment) and someone posted their letter to the editor about the article. The author (Rick Krivoniak) noted that there are no plans for individual custom homes to be allowed. I can already envision the right of way at I-35 51st covered with a flock of Toll Bros., Ryland, Centex, etc. signs.

Did the effort to create an RFQ for Catellus that was mentioned in this earlier post - http://www.livemodern.com/forums/geographic/austin/65282040122 - ever go anywhere? It looked like there were several firms that showed some interest. It would be a real bummer for no one but the aforementioned mega-builders to get in on the opportunity to build at Mueller.

Hey, guys...thanks so much for that AAS link!!

Bungaloids! What a concept...now I have a word for it; and the idea of Craftsman-on-steroids...that just made my day!
