Wigwam Building

Posted by Judith Knight at October 14. 2006

Go Wigwam! The AJC and AIA are having a contest to select Atlanta's ten top buildings of the century. The Wigwam, an International Style Building in the Old Fourth Ward, was nominated as one of the five most important buildings of Atlanta for the decade of 1936-1945. In November, after Atlanta votes, one building will be selected from each decade.

What an honor that the Wigwam was chosen. In 2004, I rescued the eight unit Wigwam Building, restored it and converted it into condos. It was the 2005 winner of the Atlanta Urban Design Award for excellence in rehabilitation and also received the 2005 Ga. Trust for Historic Preservations Award for its restoration.

At this time, there is one two bedroom 2 bath unit left. The asking price for this condo is $249,900 and you can get a garage for an additional 10,000. aaa real bonus is the ninty-six cent per year property tax for the next eight years!

A month ago I started building a two unit, Annex to the Wigwam on the adjacent lot. The Annex will be in the same style as the Wigwam, stucco with rolled steel corner windows, flat parapet roof and cool balconies. But where the Wigwam has a 40's flavor, the two units with three bedrooms, three baths in the Annex will be sleek and modern. The sales price is $320,000 for the upstairs and $310,000 for the downstairs unit. This property is right down the street from Martin Luther King's birth home in the MLK Jr Landmark District in the hip Old Fourth Ward.
