The Real Thing, please.

Canned & generic content with no personality is the bane of my existence. Business is people. Business is run by people and services are bought by people. That means all the quirks & foibles of humanity, not an uncaring, widely cast net. We have enough commercials, the world doesn’t need more, and people certainly don’t want more.

Finding the Real Thing.

Daily 5 Remodel had a great article that included some stats on social media that indicate how people actually find the Real Thing. Behold:

Social networking site use by age group (Pew)

To quote my own comment on the above chart:

I find that people are willing to dig a little harder than BBB, Angie’s List & look for authentic presence over prepared & paid-for testimonials. For my business, the folks who look for that genuine content (twitter, forum activity answering questions, project progress photos, and sense of humor etc) are the better clients because they tend to share ownership of the project in a good balance with a pro. – See more at: http://www.daily5remodel.com/index.php?action=article&rowid=1944#sthash.Gjrj4owa.dpuf

My best clients are listeners, they’re involved in their project without being micromanagerial, they have genuine curiosity of how things work in remodeling. Not just with scheduling but also with how construction works. They are interested in what’s actually behind the drywall, and seeing the work progress to change their home from day to day.

Conversation invariably wanders to things like favorite NC beaches & fishing spots, red vs white wines, TV shows like NCIS, Downton Abbey & The Good Wife, & whether the new Wolverine movie is any good. & More than once they say, “It’s cool to go to work in the morning & come home to see what’s different!” They’re just as authentic as we are – we’re all people.
