Some are calling it New York magazine’s most prodigious cover ever, but most people don’t know what photographer Iwan Baan had to go through to snap the remarkable photo of a half-dark New York City after Hurricane Sandy. “Renting a car, hunting for gas and inching my way through traffic to get to the heliport was by far the most trying and difficult part of getting this shot!” writes Baan about his race to capture the aerial photograph depicting New York in a state that it will hopefully never see again.
