Important Arts & Crafts Collection To Be Sold At Auction

The John Toomey Gallery recently announced that its December 6th auction will feature the Collection of Robert and Elaine Dillof. This impressive group of turn-of-the-century works is considered to be the best collection of Arts & Crafts to come to auction. More after the jump... "The Dillofs began their collection in the early 1970’s and have amassed an assortment of more than 260 items of furniture, pottery, woodblock prints, silver, textiles and lighting. Nearly every major designer of the American Arts & Crafts period is represented in the Dillofs’ well-rounded collection, which was housed in their home in Croton Falls, New York.

Included in the sale will be a monumental Grueby vase, decorated by Ruth Erickson, a hexagonal Gustav Stickley table with an original leather top, ironwork by Marie Zimmerman, and several woodblock prints by Margaret Patterson, Edna Boies Hopkins and Gustave Baumann. The session will conclude with a rare Louis Sullivan designed elevator grille from the lobby of the Chicago Stock Exchange Building, which was produced in 1893 and has an estimate of $20,000-30,000.

The Collection of Robert and Elaine Dillof will be presented as part of the wider December 6, 2014 John Toomey Gallery 20th Century Art & Design auction, which boasts a selection of more than 1,000 prominent fine and decorative artworks including furniture, paintings, pottery, sculpture and lighting. Other highlights of the auction include exceptional works by African-American artists Palmer Hayden, Hale Woodruff and Bob Thompson, fine art by Andy Warhol, William Turnbull and Gertrude Abercrombie, as well as modern design by Sam Maloof, Pierre Jeanneret and George Nelson.

The John Toomey Gallery will host an early preview event on Tuesday, November 18th from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. to benefit the Pleasant Home Foundation of Oak Park, Ill. The event will feature a book signing by Judith Miller, author of “Arts & Crafts: Living with the Arts & Crafts Style,” a silent auction, wine and hors d’oeuvres. Public preview exhibition for this auction will be held at the John Toomey Gallery, 818 North Boulevard, Oak Park, IL, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on November 29 and December 1-5.
