Emigration Canyon is a perfect place for people who need a place of living, also a place to enjoy the outdoor natural environment.  Sustainable building is needed to protect the environment. One of them is this eco friendly house, created by Sparano Mooney Architecture for a couple with young children. Supported by its beautiful view of the Wasatch Mountains and the local flora and fauna of the high desert canyon, this home becomes a perfect house to enjoy lots of the outdoor-indoor experiences. Thanks to its sustainable features, this home earned LEED Silver Certification as a proof of its sustainability.

Sustainable Emigration Canyon Residence 2 The Sustainable Emigration Canyon Residence : a LEED Building

This 2,500 sq ft eco construction was designed to provide expansive view of the canyon and provide space for gathering and entertainment for the family, both indoor and outdoor. It consists of two levels, where the main living spaces are located on the top level. The lower level covers a multiple and flexible use spaces for house guests, a home office, a playroom or an art studio. To provide great outdoor feeling, a 30 foot operable wall is used for the great room which faces the canyon. It can be opened to provide outdoor feeling. This feature also encourage the natural day lighting, supported by the solatube skylights.

The exterior of this beautiful eco friendly building is formed  by cor-ten steel cladding combine with a board-formed wood textured concrete. The materials chosen provide low maintenance. The claddings are from recycled steel shingles. Their deep rust color provide a good matching with the condition of the canyon in fall season.

Another sustainable features used in this house are rainwater collection system, dual-flush toilets,  In-floor radiant heating. These features provide minimum energy need of the house. Passive design was adopted. Of course natural ventilation is also available. For the landscaping, native and drought-tolerant plants were chosen, providing a good blend with the surroundings. This sustainable home building was built with minimum excavation of the site to minimize the disturbances of the environment.
