Living in the Bay Area life is very much two-degrees-from-Alice-Waters, where every rising star chef seems to have passed through her kitchen and many a lunch lady has toured her Edible Schoolyard in Berkeley. To celebrate the restaurant's four decades as a leader of the farm-to-table movement, Waters has just published 40 Years of Chez Panisse: The Power of Gathering . This week marked the beginning of a slew of festivities to celebrate (with proceeds going to The Edible Schoolyard Project), including a School Lunch held in downtown San Francisco hosted by Waters and Levi's. To order a copy of 40 Years of Chez Panisse: The Power of Gathering ($32.14), go to Amazon. Above: Waters latest tome includes a foreward by Calvin Trillin and an afterword by Michael Pollan. Above: Organized by decade, the book includes a trove of archival material and photographs—menus; invitations; photographs throughout the years of Alice at the restaurant—and interviews with chefs, purveyors, and public figures. Above: Picnic tables draped with lengths of canvas as tablecloths. Above: Simple kitchen jars wrapped in burlap and twine hold blooms from the garden.
