Bill-keck-christmas-card-1941Back in July, I put the call out for more architecture and design-related holiday cards to share this December. Well, December is now upon us and Frank Gruger was kind enough to share the following card and memory with us. Read about it after the jump...

Frank writes:

"The last Christmas before we moved into our house I was talking with my aunt about our house hunting woes (we had lost a contract on the Bertrand Goldberg house in Flossmoor, as well as a nice Zisook in Flossmoor as well, and had looked at a few Kecks out that way) and was trying to explain to her that we were looking for something unique and functional, well thought out, and made a joke about it needing to be a glass house. She then blurts out "Oh well you must want a house like my crazy uncle used to build..." which after about a minute I figure out she's talking about William Keck!  Now I can't claim a bloodline to Kecks as she's my aunt by marriage and Bill Keck was actually her father's cousin's husband... but I'll take it!

She told me stories of attending holiday parties at the Keck apartment/flat every year until adulthood and last year gave me this print (addressed to her parents), which was included or functioned as a holiday card every year.

It's not a graphical holiday card in the traditional sense (but obviously an art directed photograph) but I thought it might fit in the theme of your call from back in July. I think it's pretty cool and reminds me of some of the Eames holiday photos that have surfaced in the past."

Thanks Frank--what a great memory to share with us! If anyone else has Architectural Holiday cards and memories they want to share, send them to me at eric@prairiemod.com and I'll post them for everyone to enjoy!
