IMG_1406I arrived in Phoenix this afternoon in advance of the 2014 Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy Annual Conference, which starts in full effect tomorrow.

I took the opportunity to head over to Taliesin West with author and photographer, Mark Hertzberg and his lovely wife, Cindy, to catch up with some of our friends there and get a little pre-conference Wright fix. More after the jump...

I was excited to visit Taliesin West again and catch up with many of the people that I have come to know over the years, including Margo Stipe, Oskar Munoz, and Indira Berndtson. Margo was kind enough to take Mark, Cindy, and I into the archives and show us some of the treasures of Taliesin that are still housed there.

Upon entering the archival storage space, a large work table greets us with a trove of rare Japanese prints, embroidered textile swatches, intricatly cut stencils for decorating fabric, first edition books, printed programs, a host of tributes and accolades--all collected, given, or owned by Frank Lloyd Wright.

As we enjoyed soaking up all of this beautiful artwork and rare pieces, a knock at the door heralded the arrival of some special guests: Frank Lloyd Wright's grandson and his wife. Tom Wright is the son of Robert Llewellyn Wright, Frank Lloyd Wright's youngest child from his first marriage. Indira had brought them over to meet Margo and enjoy the various archival items we were looking at.

It was a wonderful opportunity to not only see some amazing objects owned by Mr. Wright, but also to hear some of the personal stories and recollections from one of Wright's own descendants.

As we said our goodbyes, the setting sun made Taliesin West absolutely glow with a radiant light and we spent some time wandering around and soaking up the magic of this beautiful desert oasis.

It was then on to the Arizona Biltmore Hotel to check-in, register for the conference, and get ready for the even more amazing sites we're going to see in the coming days. Check back all this week to get a wrap-up of each day's events and see more fantastic things from this year's FLWBC conference.
