For patients with retinitis pigmentosa, a diagnosis used to mean it was the end of the road for good vision. With the disease, photoreceptors in the eye do not function properly, making it very difficult if not impossible to see. But thanks to new technology developed by Second Sight Medical Products, sufferers can take advantage of the Argus II, a bionic eye that bypasses the damaged rods and cones of the retina altogether. A miniature camera housed in a pair of glasses captures a scene, and the video is sent to a computer worn by the patient. The computer processes the data and sends it back via a cable. These instructions are wirelessly transmitted to an antenna in the Argus implant located in the eye. Signals via the implant are sent to an array of 60 electrodes that emit small pulses of electricity, which are meant to stimulate the retina’s remaining healthy cells and send information to the brain via the optic nerve.
