The Self-Excavation Hurricane House is designed to cleverly use the hurricane’s strength to withstand extreme wind loads. Margot Krasojević Architects designed the building to move with the hurricane, yet provide enough resistance and weight, to dig itself into its own excavated engineered landscape. The house features a helicoid retaining wall along which part of the structure can rotate with the hurricane and thus mobilize its hydraulic pivots. This allows it to burying itself as it turns.
