The Institute for Patient-Centered Design held a competition for its Family Centered Cancer Care facility, and RS&H Inc.‘s design has been chosen as one of the top three submissions. Children who are in inpatient care are often scared and lonely, so the space was designed to nurture entire families while the kids are in treatment. There are nooks to explore, a giant marker board wall that can be colored from top to bottom, and a projection screen on which movies can be shown. The idea of “nooks” was a prevalent one, as the team wanted to create little pockets of safe space to support both the children and their families, while distracting the children from discomfort associated with their medical treatments.
