The 2012 Olympics are coming. That means.. newly fashioned medals! Designed by the model-maker of Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, the 2,100 medals created for the upcoming Olympics are the largest medals to date. At 85mm in diameter and weighing 400 grams each, this year’s winners will truly sparkle.

Only the Vancouver Winter Olympics’ medals beat the 2012 medals in weight division, weighing double the medals of next year. The previous record for the heaviest medals of the summer games were Barcelona’s medal in the 1992 games, which weighed 231 grams each. This year’s medals definitely take the cake, the British team had to specifically adjust their suit pockets so they can fit the 7mm thick medals.

Designed by British artist David Watkins, the front of the medal has the Lisa-Simpson-giving-a-blow-job (not as graphic as you think) 2012 icon  superimposed over the geometric design of London Thames river. On the back, the Greek goddess Nike stands among the 1896 Panathenaic stadium, which represents the games spirit.
