The Lester Kaufmann House by Samuel Marx
1414 Garfield Ave. Aurora IL 60506

Tour and meet the owner of this 1954 Mid-Century Modern designed by Samuel Marx. House Beautiful Magazine wrote in 1948 that Marx’s rooms “had so satisfying a feeling of oneness that it’s frequently hard to say where the architecture ends and the furniture begins”. Restrained luxury that is quintessentially modern would describe this amazing 4 bedroom, 4-1/2 bath 3,368 sq. ft. ranch. Custom built for Mr. & Mrs. Lester Kaufmann – owners of a clothing manufacturing company in Aurora.  Brochure from a garden walk in 1957 states that Mrs. Kaufmann hand picked the Norwegian pine for the ceilings.
Tons of closet space – including a hallway of closets in the master bedroom suite. Some of the closets also include built in dressers. Second bedroom also has it’s own bath with walk-in closet and built in dressers. Original “Geneva” kitchen cabinets with built in under cabinet lighting, pull out drawers, six burner cooktop and grill with industrial hood and stainless steel counter top. There is a bank of lined – locking drawers - for your good silver.

45 feet of floor to ceiling glass from the dining room through the living room and into the rec room - letting the outside in. Double sided stone fireplace with signature Marx fossil stone mantel. Vitrolite in kitchen and floor to ceiling in the master bedroom bath - which has a stand alone shower. Private 1,000 sq. ft. paver patio. Original 1954 soda fountain in basement rec room. The list goes on and on!

This home is currently for sale by owner, so if you know anyone looking for a mid-century home in this area, please bring them to the event! Owner's contact info available upon request.
