Design savvy and mud-fearing, but fantasize about living in a barn? Here's a way to indulge that fantasy without committing; well, at least not for more than a few nights. Located in Twente, a town in the rural eastern Netherlands, Droste's Boerderijlodges combines the rustic charm of abandoned farm buildings with a pared-down modern design (a friendly farm animal or two included). Above: A pair of bunk beds has been tucked under the stairs. Above: Family accommodations include cooking and living quarters. Above L: At Droste's Boerderijlodges, they subscribe to the Swedish sleep system, using several layers of mattresses. Above R: Chalkboard signs direct guests to their accommodations. Above: Modern furniture built with natural materials complements the rustic plaster walls of the original farm building. Above: Droste's Boerderijlodges has five farm sites ( Beuningen , Delden , Hezingen , Nutter, and Mander ) that have been turned into hotel accommodations. Above: A cozy nook has been lined with cheerful wall paper. Above: A bedroom suite including bath and sink have been slipped under the eaves of a farm building. Above: Droste's Boerderijlodges are often used for wellness retreats. Above: A friendly guest. N.B. Planning a trip to the Netherlands? Be sure to look up the Netherlands in our City Guides.
