A beautiful and contemporary farmhouse was designed by Olson Kundig Architects. It was designed to respond the interest of the client in the design of Philip Johnson’s Glass House. The design of green building considered on how to create a comfort house in all weather situation. The house is then called Glass Farmhouse, located in Northeast Oregon, near the client’s existing wooden barn.

This green home design looks like a giant glass box. The sustainable house adopts the passive house concept to control the interior’s temperature. This house was built to face south orientation, so it will receive maximum solar heat gain from the low-angled sun during winter, and at the other side, receiving minimum solar heating at dry or hot season.

This green house construction took the form of traditional architecture of barns and farmhouses in the Pacific Northwest.  The eco friendly house  was build on a concrete foundation. Its base is completely free from any effectual heat absorption or release.

Roof overhangs and a light shelf are provided to help controlling the solar heating. The windows are also operable, to provide natural cross ventilation. The glasses used here are made from super efficient glass. With the operable windows and super efficient glasses, this environmentally friendly home can reduce its dependency to the air conditioning units.

The interior design were set very beautiful, supported by the beautiful surrounding views provided by large glass windows and walls. The location of this green construction is surrounded by the wheat fields and mountains, creating a beautiful and calm situation. With the passive concept applied, this green house building really can provide comfort in all weather conditions for the inhabitants.
