This Challenge Grant follows on the heels of the National Trust’s annual conference, which was held in Buffalo two months ago—the best attended conference the Trust has ever had. Many of the conference attendees visited Graycliff….and were very enthusiastic about the restoration efforts underway.
The four sites competing for the grant funding were selected by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and its local partner, Preservation Buffalo Niagara
“All of us at the National Trust have warm memories of our time in Buffalo, and we are thrilled to be coming back so soon to give a gift to one of Buffalo’s unique historic sites, just in time for the holidays,” said Stephanie Meeks, National Trust for Historic Preservation president. “We were inspired by the many local residents who are passionate about preserving Buffalo’s outstanding historic places. ‘Buffalo Challenge’ will allow the Queen City to, once again, rally around preservation by voting for the most deserving historic place.”
Graycliff is a true grass-roots success story. Faced with demolition just 14 years ago, the lake-side estate designed by Frank Lloyd Wright was saved by volunteers and members from throughout the community—with help from individuals nationally and internationally. Now a New York State Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Graycliff attracts thousands of visitors annually from across the country and around the world.
Known as the “Jewel on the Lake”, Graycliff’s architecture, gardens and landscape were designed by Wright in his mid-career (1926 - 1931) organic style. With restoration more than 65% completed, and work progressing well, this Challenge grant will assist the Graycliff Conservancy in its efforts to preserve, restore and make accessible to the public the Graycliff Estate.
Dont forget to cast your vote, and be sure to forward this opportunity to friends and family who care about preserving our collective cultural history!
