In protest to Zaha Hadid’s design for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Stadium, 2013 Pritzker Prize winner Toyo Ito has proposed an alternative stadium plan that would slash the current expected price tag in half. Officially announced early this week, Ito’s proposal calls for a renovation of the existing stadium and an immediate halt to Japan’s planned demolition of that stadium scheduled for July. The alternative design was announced in an online petition headed by Japanese architects – and it has already reached 13,000 signatures.
