Amangansett Home is a sustainable home designed by Francois de Menil Architect for  a family with two young children in Eastern Long Island. It has simple design, but still looks beautiful, thanks to the materials used for the construction. Of course sustainable features become very important and really considered.

This 1,900 sq ft eco friendly construction was designed in long and narrow shape. The building was lifted up above the ground to avoid flood, as the location is next to fresh water wetlands and located within a FEMA flood zone. The entry access is provided by a ramp on the north side. The lifted condition also reduce disturbances to the land. This 3-bedroom house’s exterior is dominated with wooden materials, from 4-inch horizontal tongue-and-groove Alaskan yellow cedar boards for the cladding, to IPE wood for the deck. The interior was designed simple by the existing of beech veneer built-in cabinets.

Designed to capture sun light optimally in both winter and summer, this sustainable home adopted passive design principles. Large south facing windows can provide maximal access for both sun light and sun heat, to provide natural day lighting and warmth on winter. To protect the house from over sun heating, overhangs are also provided. The house is also completed with clerestory windows, around the house to maximize the light access. There are also operable windows on both the north and south, providing natural ventilation for cooling purposes.

This sustainable building design integrated 16 in concrete slab floor, acts as thermal mass storage. It is supported also with radiant floor heating to provide warmth in winter. In summer, there are ceiling fans that can provide good air circulation. In winter, high R-value insulation will keep the heat inside the house.

All of these beautiful things are supported by the existing of butterfly roof that creates a feel of lightness for the eco friendly building. What a beautiful design, isn’t it ?
