Black walnut trees are all over our land, which at first seemed a bit of a bummer…they are protected and we can’t cut them down. It’s not that I’m chainsaw happy… It’s just that we probably have thirty of them, and that they release something through their roots that kills some plants.

However… Now that I’ve resigned myself to these trees, I’ve found out how much you can do with their fruit. We can cook with them, making savory dishes, although most recipes are for baked deserts which I’m not really ever into but we can also make ice cream which I can always go for…great sweet and savory recipes to be found here. here

And the pioneers used them to make black dye…and this great blog called practical primitive has a step by step of how to follow in their footsteps ( and blackened hands)
