We stopped in yesterday at the open house for Mobile Loaves and Fishes' Community First! microhouse development. Located on 27 acres on the east side of town, the master-planned community is designed to help get homeless people off the street and a leg up. They have a micro-church, chickens, goats, bees, gardens, workshops, a medical facility, an outdoor movie theater, bus access, and wifi. All in all there will be 228 homes at the campus, 20 canvas cottages, 91 RVs, and 117 micro-homes.

The micro-homes are, of course, tiny, with power but no HVAC, bathrooms, or full kitchens (there are fridges and microwaves). Bathroom facilities are centralized as are full kitchens. The houses are all under 200 square feet and thus don't require a permit from the city. As you can see from the one above, some of them are modern (and quite nice!). The bride saw where the canvas cottages rent for $80 a month.

Several of the designs are sourced from a "Tiny Victories" design competition held by AIA Austin and Community First!

It's a neat deal! And sponsorships are still available.
