my grandparents’ house in the 1950s

and today

and, a sad-ish type element to this search i just did when i was looking for the google image search….

turns out that if you have an awesome, simple house in what used to be a possibly dynamic city that fell on slightly hard times as the world changed…or in general, in a third or fourth-tier midwest city….that you can get that house for very little, even if that house is less than 200 feet to Lake Michigan. Something to think about for those of you who like snow and can work anywhere.

and as you can imagine, when someone buys that mid-century modern house in said small town they can do whatever they want: which of course makes total sense: it’s their house, not ours or my grandmother’s anymore.

they put a big weird peaked roof garage up behind my grandparents’ house, not something that made sense with the main building.

But, it makes me think about how much longer a house might stay with you if you or your parents or your grandparents design it and build it….and how good design gets messed with everyday….and maybe build your house somewhere at least one of your kids or grandkids might want to live:)
