My parents were in town this past weekend, and we did more work on our house.
Dan is going to be the architect of record because my dad isn’t licensed in CA. They met with the structural engineer, and by all counts it was a great meeting. At dinner that night, it was really awesome to see my parents hang out with friends from college. I’ve seen them with grad school friends, and other friends, but it was cool to see a bit more about this time of their lives. If you are interested, Dan has an awesome mechanical pencil collection and also sells them on ebay here.
We headed back and worked more on the house, and tried to tackle some possible setbacks: like we might need covered parking for two cars, something we hadn’t really wanted. Also, we visited a friends place, and it was 40′ wide, and that felt about right, while our place is narrower. We went back and forth about these bigger issues as well as details throughout the house.
Monday we got serious, and we went downtown to start getting paperwork.
My parents asked some questions of the Planning Department of LA.
All around us, people with big rolls of plans were getting their S*&^ done. It was (I am NOT joking) super fun.
Our (super friendly) contact in planning directed us to set up a meeting in City Hall with the head of our local Historical Zone Board. Since we had time, were nearby, and maybe because we are annoying, we walked over to city hall and
kinda ambushed met the woman on the Board. She told us we need to get our drawings to a preliminary meeting later this month. Isaac will be teaching so I’ll be going it alone. We have to get everything with the parking and the width completed by then, have drawing packs and also a materials presentation.
