Barnwell Parker Geoscience Ltd: ecoshedworking

Barnwell Parker Geoscience Ltd is run by Andrew Barnwell and Sarah Parker who are geophysical and geological consultants to the international oil & gas industry. Based in Tan y Berllan Isaf, North Wales, they run their business from a marvellous and eco-friendly garden office. The splendid green roof (which you can get up onto to wander around) was inspired by a wooden cabin in Norway where Andrew and Sarah (pictured below, shedworking) once worked, while the insulation is natural sheep fleece from Wales. Indeed, all the timber used in the build is a mixture of recycled or renewable local larch planks. A nice additional touch is the wood burner used to heat the office (though with all that insulation it probably doesn't need much). The shed is fully kitted out to enable longterm stays(it has a lavatory and washbasin). Indeed, when the family was building the house and living in a static caravan on site, they all decamped to the shed to sleep during stormy/freezing weather and electricity cuts. Friends have also slept in it. So it's a multipurpose shedlike atmosphere.

The marvellous artist Tony Hart who sadly died earlier this year was a keen shedworker. In an article for The Times about his working habits he wrote: "Every day since Jean [his wife] and I had come to live in Shamley Green in 1965 I had followed a regime. After breakfast I would adjourn to my studio, built in my garden. I would work until Jean called me in to lunch, and then went back to my studio until 4pm, when I would change my shoes and set forth on a four-mile Gurkha-pace jog through the Surrey Hills." There's a touching video on the BBC web site of a Morph flashmob organised by a Facebook group in honour of Tony Hart which is a must-see for anybody who remembers this lovely chap and his work.

An excellent slideshow of home offices in the Los Angeles Times features the marvellous garden office belonging to Santa Monica architect Jesse Bornstein (photos: Mark Boster), pictured above and below. As the LA Times says: "Forget great rooms, walk-in closets and spa-like bathrooms. The home office has become the new staple of the American home." The rest of the slideshow is well worth a browse too.

Instead of the usual fabric covered panels, the partitions in My Studio are made of combinations of translucent or solid panels available in different heights. It leaves me with the impression of an old office fit out from the 30s or 40s where framed glass panels often made up the walls of what were considered modern offices of those times.
