Blog Directory
Below is an annotated list of the blogs that are currently subscribed to the Blogs section of LiveModern. Note that we've just started this service, and as we receive permission from the blogs that we've invited to participate we will be updating this directory.
We're always on the lookout for interesting blogs to add to our subscription list. If you think there is another appropriate blog—related to the mission of this site—please let us know.
We don't want to overwhelm you with content. So, we've developed the following guidelines about which blogs we'll try to subscribe to:
- The blog must be related to the mission of the website, modern and sustainable.
- The blog can't be primarily a commercial blog, i.e., the bloggers are blogging primarily to make a living. We love these bloggers but they are already well known. We're looking for the blogs that are part of the long tail.
- The blog must be active, at least 1 blog entry per month (more active blogs will be favored). If the blog is not active, it will be replaced by a more active one.
- We need to get permission. If we can't contact the blogger by email, it may be hard. If you have an email address for the blogger, please pass it along with your nomination.
- We need to be able to successfully import blog entries. Most common blog platforms are supported (Blogger, WordPress, TypePad, Moveable Type, etc.). We'll test the blog before we ask permission, and if blog entries import fine, then we'll proceed with an invite. Sometimes they will not, however, and it's almost always due to how the blogger is using their tools. Normally we won't ask them to change what they are doing, so if it does not look good here we won't subscribe to the blog.
Of course, we do make exceptions for exceptional blogs recommended by our readers.
If you know of a blog that meets at least the first three criteria, and are not on the list below, let us know. We'll check 'em out.
With that, here are the blogs to which LiveModern is currently subscribed, by topic:
Architect Blogs
These blogs are from architects and designers dedicated to modern housing and documenting their processes.
- designSTUDIOmodern—by Mark Meyer in central Texas.
- [suggest one—see below]
Build Blogs
Most bloggers on LiveModern were documenting the process of building their modern home. This is where all the blogs of this type have been collected. As homes are finished, we'll unsubscribe from the blog but the content will remain archived on LiveModern.
- 100khouse.com—This blog is a record of one development team in downtown Philly trying to see if they can build both a modern and “green” house for a measly $100,000.
- 225 Corley St—We're Calvin Florian and Kelly Hart. Together we bought a piece of land right in the middle of Atlanta, Ga. We wanted to build a modern home in between two of the most historic neighborhoods in the city. This blog documents the highs and lows of the process, from financing, designing, zoning, building, and pretty much everything in between. We hope it encourages others to take some risks and make something special of their own.
- 5ive—Diary of a LEED Platinum home.
- 7301 Ava Ln—A home being built in the Agave development, Austin, TX.
- Alana and Alex on Agatha in Agave—Two chicks, two cats, 3 dogs, 1 Dyson vacuum cleaner full of fur, 3 fish, big love, building a new place for all in Agave.
- Apartment House—An exercise in smallness, or “Zac and David build a house.”
- Austin ModHouse—Building a MCM-Inspired Home in West Lake Hills, Texas.
- Bare Hill Barn House—Converting an nineteenth-century barn into a modernist home for a family of six.
- Building a modernist (and hopefully green) home—We are long-married couple building our "last house" in Culver City, CA. We have always been modernists, initially expressed through our furniture -- our first dining chairs, in 1969, were Bertoia -- and then through the interior design choices of our 6 prior houses. While some of those were new houses, the builder had already determined the design. So this will be our first custom, designed from scratch, home.
- Building Green in Vermont—Constructing a modern, green farmhouse on a budget in northern Vermont.
- building sight—Building Sight; an obvious play on words. This blog aims to be a running commentary on a design-build renovation of a house for myself in Montserrat, British West Indies. It is a building site, which the world is allowed to view...building sight.
- Dave and Christina—"haste on with me…"
- Diary of a Vermont Eco Builder—Sustainable and beautiful house design.
- EcoDEEP Haus—This blog is about the design and building of a sustainable house project, a transformation of a 1940's Cape Cod in St.Paul MN for 2 architects and their family.
- EconoMod—Building an eco-friendly modern house on a budget.
- From the Ground Up—An interactive journal tracking Jason Hammond and his family as they plan, design and build a unique modern contemporary home in the Twin Cities.
- Home Delivery—Fabricating the modern dwelling at the Museum of Modern Art.
- House on the Hill—The trials and tribulations of building our house, our way.
- Hus Langford—Detailing our efforts to build a summer home in the Swedish Archipelago.
- Kyle and Dara’s New Modern Home Construction—Our quest to build a modern house in midtown Atlanta.
- Live/Work—A new studio, a new home.
- Long Island Beach House—I'm a serial mover, but this is the only house I've ever had a serious relationship with. It was designed in 1968 by Andrew Geller, and I'm trying to update it without doing it any harm. With little money and few skills it's a challenging endeavor.
- Longhouse—Our modern take on the Native American Longhouse allots 1600 s.f. of living space, 3 bedrooms, and 2 baths for our family of four. I'm a registered architect currently practicing with Elliott Elliott Norelius Architecture in Blue Hill, Maine. Our design is a study in simplicity of form using a modern material palette and reductive detailing.
- Mayo Woodlands Home—Building a house (or the attempt to) in the Mayo Woodlands development in Rochester MN.
- Modern House—The Miller Barter House. A home constructed through the collaboration of a community.
- Modern in Atlanta—This is a blog for my new modern home in Atlanta, GA.
- Modern in MN—Pictures and words that document the conception, design and birth of an extraordinary modern-industrial loft house in Minnesota.
- Modern in NE Minneapolis—The Downing/Perrault residence.
- Rancho Deluxe—Trials, tribulations, occasional successes and desiderata related to designing and building a modern getaway.
- renovationbloviation—This is the evolving story of my home renovation - the plan and execution. The house was built in 1978 exactly the way the original owners wanted it, and they never changed a thing. The disco balls are coming down, the nasty linoleum is coming up, and tub enclosure units are outahere. It will be totally transformed at the end of this process (will it ever really end?) and this will be my witness and record.
- SIPs House—SIPs house is an exercise in pushing the limits of sustainable design in Portland OR.
- Sjodin Dream Home—So maybe you're curious or really need some tips on the whole "owner-builder" building process, but maybe you want to get with the Green kick and learn about eco-friendly, healthy or energy efficient features and methods that are in use today. You've come to the right place!
- Tills Home—By Matt and Laura Tills in Madison, WI
- Three Tree Journal—Building a modern home on the beach, with some surfing thrown in.
- [suggest one—see below]
Design Blogs
These blogs are usually about the field of design, by and about architects and designers.
- Blog Like You Give A Damn—The official blog of Architecture for Humanity: Minnesota.

- EdwardLifson.com, The New Modernist—Something beautiful every day.
- Exclusively Blog—Exclusively Blog is articles about topics including modern design, furniture, lighting, decorations, deals, accessories, fashion trends and contemporary style.
- Eye Candy—This blog has been set up as an extension of a free weekly e-mail we've been sending out for over 7 years. It is our intention to raise the level of design by exposing ourselves to the examples set by others (both good and bad). We sincerely hope you will think, reflect, learn and raise the bar (or at least bring some insight and/or intelligent conversation that might have been overlooked) on the project in which you are currently engaged. The thoughtful evolution of the design of our cities and built environment is dependant upon the engaged critical thinking of its design professionals.
- Grassroots Modern—Chronicling the development of new modern house plan designs, prefab house products, and our resurgent modern movement.
- Home Rejuvenation—Improving life through design.
- materialicious—I started materialicious™ at the suggestion of family and friends, who insisted that I share a bit of my knowledge & experience, as well as what I think are some good examples of residential architecture & design, craftsmanship, materials, products & methods that I think readers of this site might be interested in. I do not, and will not, post anything that I wouldn’t personally use or live in myself. Never.
- Mies and Carrots—The modern urban experience.
- Modern Residential Design
- Remodelista—Remodelista® is for interiors aficionados who share the same design DNA: a genetically encoded aesthetic. You know who you are: You’re not the type to hire an interior designer: you’re not about to outsource your decor, and you don’t want a sterile, magazine-perfect environment.

Finish Blogs
These are blogs about finishing a home, after structural and systems (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, anything that requires a building permit) work is done. So, it could be interior finishings, furniture, fixtures, and other furnishings (it's the "f" topic).
- [suggest one—see below]
Green Blogs
Sustainable design and building practices are by definition modern (in my humble opinion) so we've subscribed to the following blogs even though the "style" of the output might not be considered modern.
- designTURF—green modern snippets about design and living.
- Energy Priorities (Building Department)—What is Energy Priorities? A platform for information, ideas and commentary on smart energy -- a resource for businesses who want to be more informed energy users -- an asset to entrepreneurs and investors in the new energy sector.
- glave.dot.com—do something. do it now.
- My Green Home Blog—Your guide to green and healthy homes.
- Slow Home—Slow Home is an international movement devoted to bringing good design into real life. It takes its name from the slow food movement which arose as a reaction to the processed food industry. The sprawl of cookie cutter housing that surrounds us is like fast food - standardized, homogenous, and wasteful. It contributes to a too fast life that is bad for us, our cities, and the environment. In the same way that slow food raises awareness of the food we eat and how these choices affect our lives, Slow Home provides design focused information to empower each of us to take more control of our homes and improve the quality of where and how we live.
