It is such a pleasure to come across work that is smart and also makes your heart sing. It is an even greater treat when the creator is a friend. This spectacular project that blurs the boundaries of land art, performance art, entertainment and architecture was designed and built by Ball-Nogues Studio. I had the great pleasure to work with Gaston Nogues while we were both at Frank Gehry’s office. Gaston was always coming out of the model shop with beautiful gems. And his latest project is no exception.
Constructed from recycled plywood that had been the formwork for another Ball-Nogues project, this vessel form simultaneously reads like a flower opening to the desert sky, but also functions as a salt water swimming hole. The result, as usual, is breathtaking.
