This is one of the great examples where designing to be more sustainable cracks open new opportunities for beautiful innovation. Although I am a complete fire lover, I have come around to the cleaner burn from a gas fireplace rather than wood. We have been seeing wonderful examples of this, such as in a client’s courtyard, where they made a fire circle a major landscape element and outdoor room. And all created by gas.
Artist/architect Elena Colombo is taking fire to a new level and making it into sculpture. Her fabulous pieces mix rustic materials such as corten steel, bronze, concrete, bone and gabions, creating not only fire, but true works of art.
My previous love of fire now seems like a faded school-girl crush. However, my new serious obsession with Colombo’s work is the real deal.
