Frank Gehry’s much anticipated New World Center in Miami Beach recently opened. Designed in collaboration with Michael Tilson Thomas, it is an extremely interesting formal manifestation of new ways music is taught, presented and experienced.
The building has a sophisticated restraint through the slick exterior glass walls that house the sculptural interior “towers” where the various meeting and music rooms reside. This parti allows the beautiful Miami sunlight to be filtered through the sinuous shapes in the public spaces between the towers. The shadows move throughout the day, as if dancing to the music themselves.
I feel fortunate to have been able to watch this one be constructed. I highly recommend a visit, as this one is definitely worth experiencing first-hand.
