I am looking for a job! For all the usual reasons of course but I’m trying to look at the downturn in the economy (my personal economy) as an opportunity – a fresh start, a reset button, the chance to do something fun. I can’t afford to go back to school to study biology (my next career as a herpetologist is still on hold) so the next best thing would be to take a sabbatical and work for a larger firm than my own learning all sorts of new stuff that I didn’t learn on my own or in my previous internships.. Perhaps I should call this “internship take 2”. Whether this means moving either just myself or my whole family for a period of time remains in question. An ideal situation may be to work for a firm that would like to gain a more local foothold in Vermont, or at least this part of Vermont and could use a relationship with myself to do this. In any case, I am putting it out here on my blog as part of my self-marketing strategy. Below is an excerpt from my cover letter:

August 10, 2011

I am interested in a position with your firm. I am looking for an opportunity to branch out from my current focus into a more collaborative setting.

I have been the sole proprietor of a small architecture firm in Brattleboro, Vermont for over a decade and have developed an extensive portfolio of residential projects locally and throughout New England with an underlying emphasis on green design. Prior to starting my firm, I was a carpenter/designer for a local building firm and gained years of experience on a crew building houses and additions of my own design. I am currently a licensed architect in Vermont and Massachusetts. I have obtained LEED AP certification. I am a member of the AIA and hold an NCARB certificate. I have also won several awards in housing design competitions. I enjoy being continually engaged in the evolving conversation about green design and building science and their effect on architecture and communities past, present and future.

Please view my Bluetime Collaborative website which serves as my portfolio of past work, my blog, Vermont Architect which provides more insight to the process aspect of my work as well as the Bluetime Collaborative Facebook page which has been a less formal outlet for dialogue with people interested in what I do and how I approach my work. My Linked-In profile contains a brief summary of my work history, links to the website and blog as well as references. Taken together these resources provide a good overview of who I am, what I have accomplished and what I am capable of.

Thank for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.

Respectfully,
Robert Swinburne
